Recap of our 2019 Event... Make sure to be there in 2020!
It is Monday morning, Kenosha sitting at 21 degrees and snowing! It is a far cry from the amazing day we all shared on Saturday as we honored and recognized our Veterans and Active Military.
I have a long list of thank yous and will blend those in throughout my ramblings!
The planning for this event started in January, as the responsibility of honoring our Veterans was handed off to us from Jerad Bane, the founder of this event. Thank you Jerad for trusting us to carry on your vision.
Meetings and working with UW-Parkside Facilities and Police personnel to secure our start/finish area, Kenosha County Parks to secure the bike path route and the Kenosha Country Sheriff’s Department for traffic control. They were all more than helpful in assisting making this an enjoyable and safely-run event.
I hope everyone liked the start and finish on the track, it was my vision to run on a flag lined track and I thought is worked out great. Reason the 2-mile was 2.1 miles and the 10K was 6.3 miles, I wanted to use both straight aways on the track. Congratulations to all of you for establishing a new personal best time! Yes, we will have the same set up next year.
TEAM RWB, thank you for building your Leadership Conference around this event and drawing your members from chapters throughout the Midwest. Through your efforts and the efforts of others I believe we had close to 100 Veterans-Active Duty and Reserves attend the event.
Chris Carr, thank you for arranging for the Color Guard to attend and properly start our event. For our Marquette ROTC Cadet Choir for singing the National Anthem, your presence is appreciated and thank you for making the trip.
For our UW-Parkside ROTC, huge thank you for assisting with many aspects of the days set up, course traffic control and clean up. You made it easy for me Saturday morning!
I do hope you enjoyed the route and the one challenging hill! Yes the hill that never ends! If you paused at the aid station, we need to thank Tammy Weber for organizing this band of misfits! From Burn Boot Camp Michelle, Carly & Ben Vogelsang, Linda Rampale, Kimberly Ann and Brenda & Nick Konz who celebrated their Wedding Anniversary with each of you! To Tammy’s “hair cut & color” master James Andrzejek and partner Justin Heaney.
Have you seen the pictures and videos from the event yet? We need to thank Jaycee Navarro Weber, Monika Tsitsos and Becky Horsfall. Yes you need to check them out and tag yourself and others you know.
How did you like the Banner Flags at the start/finish? Thank to Beth Salinger, race director for Fort2Base for letting us use them. She puts on an amazing race in August, put it on your calendar! The smallest flags that lined the track and led you to University Drive, thank you Brad of UW-Parkside Veteran Services. Was a great finishing touch to have all these flags blowing with the wind.
I am getting hungry just thinking about this next thank you... oh my gosh, Mission BBQ... you completely blew everyone away with your friendly staff and amazing food! Those that did not join us for lunch, you have no idea what you missed… In addition to the food we had a wonderful social time having fun with awards, free stuff and great conversations. Thank you Mission BBQ!!!
You were welcomed by Kenosha Running Company Staff and volunteers, thank you to the Zuehls trio of Stephanie, Nyssa and Valerie for same day signup... Kristin and Jen for packet pick up… and for Jaycee and Tammy for filling in as needed.
The lead bike was ridden by Allison (aka “Buzzy”) and our trail runner was Stephanie aka “Office Manager”. My special assistant for the day and formal runner I coached at CLS, Steven Wright.
Those that received a PAINTED ROCK, please send us a picture.
I am saving my two biggest thank yous for last...
Those that supported this event in the past for giving us hope for the future and those that attended the event this year to give us confidence to start planning for next year’s event already. The spirit that you all brought on Saturday lifted me up and I am thankful. I hope it lifted you up in some way as well.
To our Veterans, Active Military and Reserves… thank you is only the beginning of my appreciation for your service. Over the years, my understanding and appreciation has grown and deepened for the commitment you each have made to those you do not know, but want to protect and keep us free.
Humbled and thankful.
We have a tentative date of November 7th, 2020, so yes, mark your calendar. I have few ideas to evolve the event, but would like yours… so please send me any thoughts on how to improve the event (email@example.com).
